Coach Harris is beginning his 18th season as the Brenham Cubs Assistant and First Base coach. He is a 1992 graduate of DeLeon High School, where during his senior year, his high school baseball coach encouraged him to become a teacher and a coach. He attended Tarleton State University and earned his Degree in Biology and Exercise and Sports Studies. Coach Harris played for the Tarleton State Texans for 2 seasons. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Lamar University in 2010.
Coach Harris believes developing team chemistry is the biggest key to the Cubs success. Each player needs to feel valued in order to build a team. He believes its part of his job as a coach to create an environment where athletes “buy in” to being part of something bigger than themselves and to make sacrifices for the success of the team. Coach Harris hopes the players he has coached believe he has made a difference in their lives. In order to keep his own coaching skills in top form, Coach Harris talks to other coaches about their programs to get ideas not only in baseball, but in training as well. Harris believes it’s important to keep up with what basketball, football and softball coaches do to motivate their teams. He also attends clinics to get new ideas.
Harris’s fondest memory of a former Cub player is that of John Joswiak. Joswiak had the greatest impact on Harris’s first few years as a Brenham baseball coach. He recalls the amazing work ethic, attitude and leadership skills Joswiak possessed as a junior on the Junior Varsity squad. Harris said the determination Joswiak had to be a varsity starter his senior year has set the bar for all future Brenham Cub baseball players. The 2009-2010 school year was a favorite of Coach Harris’. The Cubs played for the State Championship in football and the Cubs won the State Title in baseball.
Along with his duties as a baseball coach, Harris is also a Biology teacher at BHS and the Running Backs coach for the Cubs Varsity football team. Coach Harris and his wife LeAnn, the ARD Facilitator for Alton and Brenham Elementary Schools, have been married for 21 years. The Harris’s have three children, Shaelyn (17), Landon (15) and Ashlyn (13).
