Coach Castellanos is entering his 7th year of coaching the Brenham Cubs. He is a 2001 graduate of Lufkin High School where he played football, baseball and ran track for the Panthers. Coach C continued his education at Blinn Junior College. It was during this time Castellanos joined the United States Army and fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return, Coach C graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology. Castellanos knew he wanted to become a coach after returning home from his first year of college and visiting with one of his former coaches. He left that visit with a true appreciation for the impact his coach made on his life and Coach C knew he wanted to pass that feeling on to others.
Coach C’s philosophy on coaching is to challenge the kids on the field as well as mentally. He believes teaching lessons about life through athletics is more important that the outcome of the game. Castellanos believes that a successful year is determined years down the road, not in one night. He feels that putting the players in tough situations in practice will ensure that the game comes as second nature. Coach C likes to challenge the kids “mental toughness” every Monday to let them know they can achieve more than their minds think. Castellanos hopes his players see him as a player’s coach, a person who wants to see them succeed, but isn’t willing to let them take the easy way out. Coach C is just as passionate about the kids as he is about the game itself. Coach C has many favorite Cub players, however, former Brenham Cubs Chad Lechler, Chase Wheaton and Chris Andreas are at the top of his list. C believes these guys have set the bar high for all the other Brenham Cub Baseball players who have come after them.
Castellanos’s favorite year of coaching the Cubs was in 2013-2014 when the Cubs were State Finalists in football and one series away form a trip to the State Tournament in baseball. He believes accomplishments such as those do not come without a group of selfless kids and coaches who weren’t willing to let ANYONE outwork them on or off the field. Coach C sights 2014’s Regional Quarter Final playoff game against Friendswood as his best game ever as a Cub coach. He and Coach Andreas drove from a scouting trip in Magnolia to witness the final three dramatic innings of that game. The best moment was when Theodore “Teddy” Hoffman hit the “Balk Off” homerun that wasn’t.
Game day preparations for Coach C consist of talking with the players to see their mindset as well as talking with his fellow coaches to discuss strategies and the game plan. He also preps the field and has his daily prayer. Coach C enjoys talking to Coach Marik in the fall about baseball. C claims there isn’t a question Coach Marik doesn’t have an answer for, right or wrong.
Coach C is a World Geography teacher at Brenham High School where he is also a Varsity Secondary football coach. When he isn’t in the classroom or coaching a game, Castellanos enjoys running, fishing, playing golf and having family dinner as often as possible with his new bride, Ashley.
