Coach Marik is entering his 12th year as the pitching coach for Brenham High School and his 23rd overall year of coaching. Marik is a 1988 graduate of Bellville High School where he helped lead the Brahmas to their first ever state tournament appearance. Coach Marik continued his baseball career at Blinn College under the tutelage of Coach Richard Fletcher. Marik credits being a witness to Coach Fletcher’s passion for the game at Blinn as the reason he himself decided to become a coach. Following Blinn, Marik went on to play baseball for Coach Tony Robichaux’s McNeese State Cowboys where he was the recipient of the Walter Phillips Award. Marik also participated in the NCAA regionals with the Cowboys.
Coach Marik has made coaching stops at Talkington, Caney Creek, and Columbus before landing in Brenham.
Coach Marik notes the 2006 season as his favorite year of coaching to date because of the great men that made up a great team. Marik recalls his best game ever also came during the 2006 campaign when Jason Gurka pitched a perfect game against district foe, Waller. Gurka wore jersey #14, he struck out 14 batters and the Cubs defeated the Bulldogs by the score of 14-0.
Marik tries to prepare his players well for the game and then let them play it. He likes to remind his players of the great tradition Cub Baseball is while coaching them in a demanding, yet kind way. In order to prepare himself to be a better coach and to keep his skills sharp, Coach Marik watches a multitude of baseball games. Coach Marik has a lengthy list of game day preparations. After making sure he himself is in the proper uniform, he tends to the field: watering the mound and the field as well as preparing the bullpens and the game mound. Coach Marik oversees setting up the field for batting practice as well as watching the opposing team’s BP.
Along with his duties as Pitching Coach for the Cubs, Coach Marik is a Learning Lab teacher at Brenham High School and Head Freshman football coach. He and his wife Lindsey have been married for 15 years and have three daughters, Avery (13), Addison (11) and Amelia (10). When he’s not coaching the Cubs, Coach Marik enjoys irritating Coach Cook.
